Kickoff Workshop: Day 3

Day 3!

The hump! Everything’s coming together, but we’re at the dangerous point where we go, “Psh! Filmed and edited in 2 days! We have nothing but time!” I suspect we’re going to wake up tomorrow, look at everything that’s left, and start sprinting.

Totally amazed by everyone’s skills today. Destruction and dust simulations, tons of motion tracking, even more bug fixes, insane compositing- it’s wild. And I’m not just saying that in the polite, “Go team! Everyone’s great!” way- no. My day was a daze of revelations and discovery!

And the Video Sequence Editor is surprisingly awesome!

Huge CG jump coming tomorrow!

Below is my current wallpaper.

  1. Matt says:

Thanks for the daily progress postings. It is great to see day to day progress.

Is there an svn that is publicly available so we can watch the workflow as well?

    Watching closely…

  2. vitos1k says:

very exciting! waiting for CG part! GL

  3. Alexander M says:

Haha the first sound of the actuall clip is “cinematic boom” from freesounds.org xD

    Nice work so far!

  4. Dusty says:

    Still cracking me up!

  5. Steve says:

this is hilarious! But it might also be
    brilliant!
    :-)

  6. jhon says:

    well,what can i say…nothing?

  7. jhon says:

    it sucks

  8. hassan yola says:

well, good luck for the days remain

  9. J. says:

The editing makes a lot more more sense now there’s music in place!

Wouldn’t tracking the screen be much easier if you display some tracking markers during filming?
Btw, the reflections of lights on an LCD monitor look different when it’s on, keep that into account!

Have fun, guys, can’t wait for the result! (get some female CG artists, that gives a boost to the work ethic!

  10. Cessen says:

Aaaaaah! I can’t wait to see the VFX come together on this! Hurry! Hurry!

  11. The sound cut is great.
The title and closing logo really help the pacing. Nice work.
    Looking forward to the CG.

  12. Anonymous says:

Guys, It’s “Epic Soul Factory”, not “sould” >_< I hope, that in the real movie, you'll proofread the text <_<

  13. Christoph Pöhler aka Dracio says:

Did you use any tracker marks? or don T you need thame?

  14. Hubberthus says:

The more I watch this the more I want to be there :)
Next splash screen should be selected from this! 8D

  15. 3pointedit says:

Ian, in which way is the Sequencer “awesome”? How do you select shots and trim them? S.l.o.w.l.y

What I would really like to know is:
how you guys get the shots over to compositing, with start frames lined up and durations set, then rendered back into VSE?

    • Ian says:

I’m planning on doing a more in-depth breakdown at some point (the problem with writing these things at the end of the day is I’m a little exhausted/brain dead), but the short version is that it’s just pretty intuitive, and since it’s a part of blender, I’m finding things – like editing scenes from other blend files as footage that can be instantly updatable – to be pretty cool. I’m sure you could figure out how to select/trim shots in a matter of seconds; right click to select, like usual, and ‘g’ to move it around. Moving the arrows on either end of the clip drags the start/end point. The latest version of Blender even lets you drag and drop straight to the timeline from a folder. You can also select a group of clips and create a meta strip, which turns them into a group (editable at any time by hitting tab), which makes navigation/organization pretty great.

      • Are you saying it’s possible to edit the clip lengths in a master VSE timeline and have it automatically update the individual animation files with the new cut?

  16. Guido says:

Sorry guys, but can you please explain me what’s that supposed to mean?

    • deevad says:

As you can guess this is not finished, it’s a WIP.
If you want to look at the script they received on Monday : /production/kick-off-week/

      • Guido says:

        OK, read first, then aks;-)

But, anyway, the kick-off blog-entries didn’t tell anything of the 5-day-short-film at first glance:-) So, an entry-title like “Kick-off week: starting with a 5-day-filmlet” or something like this would have avoided this confusion;-)

  17. TweakingKnobs says:

    Uhmm…

will thhis be the movie ? where is all thaose beautifull concept art from david ? amsterdam in the future.. open air locations….

  18. Nik says:

Can you please change the z-index of the Lightbox popup div? All the youtube embedded videos get overlayed on top of it.

  19. Sévérino, says:

Good work everybody, but the final work will be MORE AWESOME !!!

It’s possible to know, on [PICTS 6] the computer with the pen, used ? it’s a cintiq ??? (i think no…) were we can found informations about it ??
    Thanks a lot !

Hey, Ton, have you think to make one HTML-page, with all material that you use for this project, for the next time (or project) you will ask more actual material to this marks of computer component)

David R.: En gros, si tu peux traduire a Ton ?

    • Ni:Zu says:

      Hi,
In picture 6 it’s my laptop running Gimp , afaik it’s the only current model that uses a Wacom screen , but it’s not a full-fledged Cintiq.

Imho a Bamboo/Intuos tablet (if you have the right hand eye cohordination) , or the 12″ Cintiq (more expensive) are much better solutions.

Wacom tablet screens are 12″ but only 512 levels of pressure and no tilt sensitivity , the LCD is not very bright and quite glossy and the pen can’t use felt tips like Cintiqs (but apparently it could if you buy old 14″ cintiq’s pens)

As a laptop it works decently , running Ununtu with some problems due to the hybrid gpu (intel/amd ..worst combination for linux and no longer supported by proprietary drivers). The amd gpu on the laptop is decent , but the cpu is quite weak (I3)

      • Sévérino, says:

Thanks a lot of, Nicolò Zubbini !! ;-)

And all, do a great, big and awesome work on this project !!! ;-)

  20. Greg Zaal says:

Watching that with the sound off was… hilarious :P This’ll be interesting/awesome when it’s done :D

  21. FreDre says:

    Just curious
What tablet is being used on this image?
